Top 10 Automobile Companies in China 2024

China is the world’s largest car market and home to many domestic and foreign automakers. In this blog post, we will rank the top 10 automobile companies in China based on their sales volume in 2023, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) and the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). We will also highlight some of their main products and future plans.

1. BYD (Build Your Dreams)

BYD is a leading manufacturer of electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and batteries. In 2023, it sold 1.2 million vehicles, up 62% from 2022, making it the top-selling automaker in China. Its main products include the Dynasty series, featuring the Tang SUV and the Han sedan, and the Ocean family, featuring the Dolfin hatchback and the Seal crossover. BYD also exports its vehicles to Europe, the Middle East, and South America, and has a joint venture with Toyota to develop more competitive electric cars.

2. FAW-Volkswagen

FAW-Volkswagen is a joint venture between China’s FAW Group and Germany’s Volkswagen Group. It produces and sells Volkswagen, Audi, and Jetta branded vehicles in China. In 2023, it sold 1.1 million vehicles, up 36% from 2022, making it the second-largest automaker in China. Its main products include the Volkswagen Magotan sedan, the Audi Q5 SUV, and the Jetta VS5 crossover. FAW-Volkswagen also plans to launch more electric and hybrid models under its new ID brand.

3. SAIC Volkswagen

SAIC Volkswagen is another joint venture between China’s SAIC Motor and Germany’s Volkswagen Group. It produces and sells Volkswagen and Skoda branded vehicles in China. In 2023, it sold 1 million vehicles, up 28% from 2022, making it the third-largest automaker in China. Its main products include the Volkswagen Lavida sedan, the Skoda Octavia sedan, and the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV. SAIC Volkswagen also aims to increase its share of electric vehicles with its new MEB platform.

4. SAIC-GM

SAIC-GM is a joint venture between China’s SAIC Motor and America’s General Motors. It produces and sells Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac branded vehicles in China. In 2023, it sold 900,000 vehicles, up 23% from 2022, making it the fourth-largest automaker in China. Its main products include the Buick Envision SUV, the Chevrolet Malibu sedan, and the Cadillac CT5 sedan. SAIC-GM also plans to introduce more electric and autonomous models under its Ultium brand.

5. Changan Automobile

Changan Automobile is one of China’s oldest and largest domestic automakers. It produces and sells Changan branded vehicles as well as joint venture products with Ford, Mazda, Peugeot-Citroën, Suzuki, and Jiangling Motors. In 2023, it sold 850,000 vehicles, up 20% from 2022, making it the fifth-largest automaker in China. Its main products include the Changan CS75 Plus SUV, the Ford Territory SUV, and the Mazda CX-4 crossover. Changan Automobile also aims to become a leader in smart mobility with its Blue Whale platform.

6. Geely Automobile

Geely Automobile is one of China’s most successful and innovative domestic automakers. It produces and sells Geely branded vehicles as well as owns stakes in Volvo, Lotus, Proton, Lynk & Co, Polestar, Smart, and Zeekr. In 2023, it sold 800,000 vehicles, up 18% from 2022, making it the sixth-largest automaker in China. Its main products include the Geely Emgrand sedan, the Volvo XC60 SUV, and the Lynk & Co 01 crossover. Geely Automobile also plans to expand its global presence with its CMA platform.

7. Dongfeng Motor

Dongfeng Motor is a state-owned enterprise that produces and sells Dongfeng branded vehicles as well as joint venture products with Nissan, Honda, Kia, Peugeot-Citroën, Renault, Stellantis ,and Volvo Trucks . In 2023,
it sold 750 ,000 vehicles ,up 15% from 2022 ,making it the seventh-largest automaker in China .Its main products include the Dongfeng Fengshen sedan ,the Nissan Sylphy sedan ,and the Honda CR-V SUV.

8. GAC Toyota

GAC Toyota is a joint venture between GAC Group and Toyota Motor Company for manufacturing Toyota vehicles in China. It was founded in 2004 as Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. and renamed to GAC Toyota in 2008. It produces models such as Camry, Yaris, Highlander, Levin and C-HR. It also has a subsidiary called GAC Toyota Engine Co., Ltd. that makes engines for its vehicles.

9. FAW-Toyota

FAW-Toyota is a joint venture between Toyota Motor Company and First Automobile Works, a Chinese automaker. It was established in 2003 and has several manufacturing and supervising affiliates in China, such as Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (TFTM) and Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (SFTM Chengdu). FAW-Toyota produces and sells various Toyota models for the Chinese market, such as the Corolla, the Avalon, the Crown and the RAV4. FAW-Toyota aims to achieve sustainable growth in China by optimizing its production system, strengthening its governance and responding to the changing market needs.

10. Chery

Chery Automobile is a Chinese state-owned car manufacturer based in Wuhu, Anhui Province. It was founded in 1997 and is one of the largest automakers in China. Chery produces a range of vehicles, including passenger cars, SUVs, minivans, and electric vehicles. Chery also exports its products to more than 80 countries and regions around the world.
